Cholesterol, Fat and Heart Disease

Welcome to the first edition of my attempt at adding an extra dimension to the practice and hopefully provide you with information that will be fun, exciting, stimulating and thought provoking.

About 90% of you that have given me your address are of the baby boom generation, therefore I've decided to start with a subject that has many confused and needs to be clearly understood for good long term health. This week's subject is cholesterol, fat, and heart disease.

The following are a few quotes taken from the Health Alert newsletter.

This quote came from Michael DeBakey, M.D., the surgeon who just went to Russia to perform surgery on Boris Yeltsin:

"An analysis of cholesterol values ....... in 1700 patients with atherosclerotic disease (clogged blood vessels) revealed no definite correlation between serum cholesterol levels and the nature and extent of the atherosclerotic disease."

This quote is from Michael Gurr, PhD., a renowned Lipid (fat) Chemist:

"Whatever causes coronary heart disease, it is not primarily a high intake of saturated fat."

Next week, I'll discuss what are the good fats vs. the bad fats, and a bold new theory that may explain the true reason for heart disease, and it's not high cholesterol!!!
